Gansu Desert Control Research Institute

Gansu Desert Control Research Institute (GDCRI) was founded in 1959. It is specializing in researches on desertification combating, eco-restoration, exploration and utilization of natural resources in arid areas. It has 17 sections,including the administration, the scientific research, international cooperation, laboratories, field observational stations, etc. The total staff is 124, including 58 senior researchers, 56 scholars with M.Sc / Ph.D degrees, 30 technicians who studied abroad, 10 experts who are honored as the leading intelligent in academic field. 15 consultants have been recruited from other institutions. It has established 15 national- and provincial-level research platforms, namely: Minqin National Study Station on Desert Steppe Ecosystem, National Base of International Scientific & Technological Cooperation, National Base of Introducing Foreign Intelligence, National Key Lab. of Desertification and Aeolian Disaster Combating, Minqin Botanical Garden of Desert Plants, Gansu Key Lab. of Desertification Combating, SPAC Lab., Observational Station of Near-surface Sandstorm, International Training Center, etc; and set up 6 permanent research stations along the 1600km-long sand-line in Gansu. GDCRI has been awarded the honorable title “The pioneering institute in desert control, forestry research and multilateral cooperation”, and has gained more than 100 scientific awards, e. g., “National Scientific Progress Award”. It has become an important platform for scientific research, teaching and academic exchanges of desertification combating and eco-environment protection.  

GDCRI has, entrusted by the Ministry of Science & Technology and Ministry of Commerce successfully organized 32 international training courses on desertification combating, eco-restoration, eco-industry development and oasis protection since 1993. Over 900 experts, scholars, government officials and technicians from 85 developing countries participated in the trainings, which were unanimously accepted by the participants and the international society. In addition, GDCRI has conducted intensive international academic exchanges and cooperation. It has received 23 study tours abroad for desertification combating, and implemented aid-foreign technological projects in 15 countries, which were highly praised by the Chinese government and the international organizations.
