Description£º The predecessor of Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (SAAS) was Shandong Institute for Agricultural Experiment, which was set up in Junan country, an old liberated area, in the fall of 1946 and was one of the few research institutes of natural science founded by the Communist Party of China during the war years. With the triumph of China's War of Liberation, the institute moved to Jinan in 1948 and was renamed Shandong Institute of Agricultural Sciences after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Since 1959,it started using the present name (SAAS). The workers and staff members here in SAAS take pride in its glorious history and the inspection by some veteran revolutionaries including Mao Zedong, Zhu de, Deng Xiaoping, Bo Yibo, Peng Zhen, etc. They consider these memorable for all of them.
The 55 years development of SAAS was 55 years of kind attention and energetic support from Party committees and governments at all levels, especially from the provincial Party committee and government of Shandong; it was 55 years of hard work and united struggle of several generations; it was 55 years of arduous exploration and tenacious scaling of new heights in science and technology by numerous scientific research personnel; and it was 55years of being in perfect harmony and touch with the masses of peasants and agriculture in Shandong province.
Through the unremitting efforts of several generations, SAAS has developed into one of China's provincial academies of agricultural sciences which are comparatively large in scale, powerful in strength, comprehensive in disciplines, and outstanding in contributions. At present SAAS has 19 institutes, re-search laboratories and research centers and 1 experimental farm, among which there are 5 monitoring setups at state, provincial or ministerial level and 9 key laboratories at provincial or ministerial level. There are 1,800 in-service workers and staff members, among whom 384 have senior technical titles, and 138 have Doctor's or Master's degrees. The total area of SAAS is 430 hectares. the facilities for research, production and daily life covers a floor space of 340,000 square meters. SAAS has a collection of 480,000 books and reference materials and preserves more than 20,000 various germplasm. It not only edits and publishes 6 periodicals of agricultural science and technological works of great academic value including China Maize Cultivation, China Peanut Cultivation, and the series of Shandong Agronomy, etc.
SAAS always adheres to the research orientation of "serving agriculture, serving the peasants, and serving rural economy" and sticks to the research method of" combing leading cadres, scientific research personnel with the masses of peasants, combing laboratories, experiment farms with rural bases, and combing experiments, demonstrations with popularization". Since 1949 it has obtained nearly 1,000 achievements in various scientific research, among which 39 won state awards and 380 won provincial or ministerial awards. The wide application of those achievements, especially of a series of significant achievements such as the wheat variety Taishan No.1 and the cotton variety Lumian No.1,has made an everlasting contribution to the building of Shandong into a big agricultural province, to the development of agricultural production in the Huanghuai area, and to the improvement of national agricultural science and technology.
Over the past 55 year, SAAS has been moving forward braving wind and rain and the torch has been passing from generation to generation. On the occasion of SAAS's 55th anniversary. the world has entered a new century and SAAS has come to a new starting point. A historic task is laid before us-to change from traditional agriculture to modern agriculture as quickly as possible and to build Shandong into a powerful agricultural province. The workers and staff members here are sure to further carry forward the tradition of "Be united, realistic, innovative and efficient" and to work as the pioneers of advanced productive forces; they are sure to fulfill their tasks to the satisfaction of the party and the people and to create a more brilliant future. |
